Abstract: Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is a gram-negative facultative anaerobe, which is one of the main pathogenic bacteria of periodontitis. With a variety of virulence factors, it can not only damage the barrier structure of gingival epithelial cells and evade the immune defense of the host, but also invade deep tissues and destroy the soft tissue and alveolar bone. The interaction between Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and human gingival epithelial cells is the first step of bacterial invasion of periodontal tissue and the key to the immune response caused by the bacteria. In this paper, we review the studies on adhesion and colonization of human gingival epithelial cells by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and its interaction with gingival epithelial cells.
